Quora is rotting from the inside out. Once a space for genuine questions and thoughtful answers, it’s now a cesspool of troll-bait, fake dilemmas, and performative idiocy designed to provoke outrage and harvest engagement.
Case in point: “I caught my 13-year-old daughter using pads for her period without my permission. What do I do now?”
My reply was: "Are you fucking serious? What was she supposed to do? Bleed down her leg? Sit in a puddle of blood until Daddy grants her access to basic hygiene? No person with a functioning brain thinks anyone, of any age, needs permission to use sanitary products."
And this isn’t an isolated incident. Quora is flooded with these bait-posts: “My son came out as gay, should I kick him out?” “My wife gained weight, can I cheat?” “My daughter wants to wear pants, how do I stop her?” These aren’t real questions. They’re rage-farming algorithms disguised as discourse. They exist to piss people off, rack up comments, and keep the outrage machine churning.
Quora isn’t a knowledge base anymore. It’s a fucking troll farm with a search bar. And every time we engage, even to call out the bullshit, we feed it. So here’s the deal: I’ll keep calling it out, because I’m no longer pretending this platform deserves respect. It’s not a forum. It’s a landfill. And I’m here to name the trash.
So, I used to use Quora in the earlier years, let's say about 2011-2012, and answered several questions pertaining to tech- and music-related things. Or music tech-related things. A lot of the more interesting and genuine questions seemed to come out at first.
ReplyDeleteOver time, however, yes, there seems to be a lot of troll-bait type or bot-type questions. Many of them seem to be things one might find on Stackoverflow, but more simplified or extremely generic. For tech stuff, as an example, and I quote: "What are the similarities of upgrade and update?"
No further context. No other information. This could pertain to Windows, macOS, Linux, or another system. Does the answer-er write to cover all potential bases, or limit it to an OS that might use those terms? Or approach from a casual user stand-point?
"How do I make my laptop screen bigger?"
Assuming resolution, that might be easy to answer. If they are more referring to the physical display itself (which might be a possibility), well, not so easy to answer.
"Is a Windows 7 laptop still okay to use in 2025?"
I... yeah. Just leave it off the network and don't plug any devices in, okay?
But, in all seriousness, yes, those are questions I find on Quora, that could probably be answered better on more appropriate fora.
The quality of questions has gone down, as have the quality of answers.
