Writers need to be paid, but dude, some of this makes poor budget sense

Look, I get it, I really do. Writers need money, just like everybody else does.

But on Substack, many MANY writers are asking for payment of $10+ per month to read their posts. $10. For one person's thoughts. Which may be posted daily, weekly, or once or twice a month...

The Wall Street Journal is $2 a week. Other news organs are in that area. The New York Times is a buck a month for six months, then rises to $25 a month. NPR's news site is free, but they do ask you join as a member and help them keep on reporting.

For those fees, I get many many articles every single day, including op-ed, which is what Substack pretty much delivers, from many different writers.

I would positively LOVE to financially support some great writers on Substack. But at $10 a month each, I could maybe afford TWO writers. Two!

I'm not putting down writers who are just trying to pay their bills. I get it, I really do. I just cannot afford that, and I know I am not alone.

I have a pay subscription to one Patreon for $3 a month (Hello Chris Brecheen!). On SSI, I simply can't afford to support any more than that, and some months, even that $3 is almost more than I can do.

I wish there was a solution that would get writers paid a fair wage and also be kind to the wallets of those of us who do not have ample funds on hand.

Just a gripe. Go back to what you were doing.
