Childhood Memories: The Atrocities of 60s Fashions

My big sister and I were hippie kids of a single parent hippie father. We wore blue jeans and tee shirts and tie dye, and funky clothes his girlfriend made for us. Pretty much everything that was not made for us was purchased at Salvation Army (or lifted out of the donation bins after dark)...

We spent most weekends with my Grammy in Jamaica Plain. Grammy kept what she considered GOOD clothing there for us. Patent leather shoes, white tights, lace trimmed ankle socks, pretty little girl dresses, white gloves, little pocketbooks, cute little hats. All of it in bulletproof doubleknit polyester that ITCHED SO FUCKING BAD! But dudes. It was the 60s. Clothes straight people of all ages wore were just plain ugh!

Every Easter, Grammy would go ALL OUT on purchasing our Easter Sunday outfits. Then her weird old camera with the gigantic flash would come out, and we would have to stand still for a picture.

Since we had to suffer through this, I think it’s only fair that all of you suffer with us. So enjoy the pics, you poor people! For the record, I'm the cute small one.

Did you have to wear such horrible things? Tell me about it!
