Let’s stop pretending this shit is subtle. The current administration is running the same early‑stage authoritarian bullshit the Nazis pulled, and everyone acting shocked can go ahead and sit down. This isn’t hysteria. This isn’t exaggeration. This is the part of the history book where the margins should be screaming “PAY ATTENTION, YOU DUMBASS MOTHERFUCKERS!”
People love to imagine fascism arrives with jackboots and bonfires on day one. No. It shows up with a smirk, a flag, and a bunch of assholes insisting that cruelty is “policy.” It shows up with leaders who talk like bullies, act like bullies, and then pretend they’re victims when anyone calls them out. It shows up with crowds chanting garbage that sounds like it was ripped straight out of a 1930s hate rally, except now it’s amplified by social media and weaponized stupidity...
And the parallels? Jesus Christ.
- Scapegoating? Check.
- Propaganda? Check.
- Dehumanizing entire groups of people? Check.
- Nationalist purity tests? Check.
- Leaders who think laws are optional for them? Big, loud, neon‑lit check.
It’s the same fucking pattern. The same national decay. The same “let’s blame vulnerable people for everything wrong in the country” horseshit that the Nazis used to warm up the crowd before the real horror started. And we’re supposed to sit here and pretend it’s just “politics” or “a difference of opinion.” Give me a fucking break.
The early Nazi regime didn’t start with genocide. It started with permission; permission to hate, permission to exclude, permission to treat human beings like vermin. It started with leaders who encouraged cruelty and followers who got high off the power trip. It started with people shrugging and saying, “Well, it doesn’t affect me.”
Sound familiar? Because it should. We’re marinating in that same toxic stew right now.
Every time someone shrugs off the lies, the hate, the authoritarian posturing, the attacks on basic human rights, the demonizing of entire communities, that’s another brick in the wall. That’s how democracies putrefy from the inside out. Not with explosions, but with apathy and cowardice. With people deciding it’s easier to look away than confront the ugly truth staring them in the face.
And the ugliest truth of all?
We are not special. We are not immune. We are not magically protected from the same horrors that swallowed other nations whole. History is screaming at us, and fuckloads of people are just too damn comfortable to listen.
So no, I’m not going to “calm down.”
I’m not going to “be reasonable.”
I’m not going to pretend this is normal or fine or just another election cycle.
If the early Nazi years taught us anything, it’s that silence is gasoline, and I’m not here to help anyone burn the world down by staying quiet.
If history is repeating, I’m damn well going to shout about it.
This is as true as it gets, and should be published in the NY Times. It is as well-written as anything on the subject I've ever read.
